(1918-96) a US singer of jazz and popular songs. She had a clear, strong voice and was called 'the first lady of song'. She performed regularly with 'Duke' Ellington, 'Count' Basie and Louis Armstrong, and later recorded many songs by George Gershwin and Cole Porter.
